The Analysis Of Interpreting Report In Shaanxi Normal University Museum

With the deepening of Chinese reform and opening up, international cooperation of politics and economy continuously extends along with the frequent foreign economical and cultural exchanges. Under such circumstances, interpreting is playing a crucial role as a bridge of communication. Interpreting has become a necessary process in cross-cultural communication. As a result, the research of cross-cultural communication is emerging. Translation and interpreting are not only the simple conversion of two languages, but also the communication of culture.Last year, I had an opportunity to practice my interpreting skills in Shaanxi Normal University Museum. The volunteer tour guide of our museum played a role as a speaker and I worked as a consecutive interpreter, and my classmate recorded this process by a camera. Chinese wedding dresses of different nationalities are the precious collections with distinguished Chinese characteristics. In order to accomplish the interpreting for the Chinese wedding dress, I need to be fully aware of the cultural background knowledge. There are three major problems emerging in the interpreting practice: cultural default, pragmatic transfer, and lexical vacancy.This thesis raises the reasons and solutions of three problems. Cultural default refers to the omission of the shared background knowledge in communication process which leads to the vacuum of understanding. The interpreter needs to reconstitute the context in the process of interpreting in order to give a better understanding to audiences. In the process of interpreting, due to the instantaneity of interpreting itself and some interpreters’lacking of cross-cultural sense, literal interpreting always emerges with ignorance of cultural factors. As a result, pragmatic failure happens. The last problem is the lexical vacancy. Every nationality possesses its own culture and civilization which leads to the lexical vacancy in the culture of other nationality. In order to address the lexical vacancy, the interpreter needs to understand not only the two languages, but also the knowledge of cross-cultural communication. The thesis will analyze these problems based on my interpreting practice in the museum.
