| Tanka people is the boat dweller in southern area of our country.According to historical records, they use the boat as home and have thesea as land. They float in the sea generation after generation and the boatis as fragile as eggshell. That is the reason why people called them “egg”,also can be spelled as Dan. Tanka people was in the status of beingdiscriminated. They could’t read, and were not allowed to wear shoes andeven live on land. However, a kind of verbal art, that is, the sea-songcomes out under that unique environment. It is only possessed by Tankapeople and also beloved by them as well as of great value and function intheir traditional life. However, with the dwelling ashore, the sea-songnow facing the danger of lost.This essay is focused on the sea-song which is inherited from thereturned overseas Chinese in Qiaogang, Beihai city. They were theChinese which returned to our country when Vietnam repelled China in1976. They went to Northern Vietnam for fishing or doing business in19century. Most of them are the Tanka people in the southeast coastal areasof China. They inherit the comparatively complete Tanka culture backwhen in Vietnam and keep it after they return to Qiaogang. The Waishaand Dijiao areas of Beihai are the domiciles of Tanka people once, but astime goes on and with the influence of the melange of land and seacultures as well as the passing of the old, the sea-song of those areasdisappear gradually. And only the returned overseas Chinese in Qiaogangis left to carry on the sea-song and possess the relatively wide massfoundation.This essay based on the field-work, using the correlation theories offolklore and cultural anthropology to do research about the sea-song ofreturned overseas Chinese of Qiaogang in Beihai. On the basis of theconnections between the sea-song and ecological environment, the author probes into the contents, classifications, artistic features and the status ofinheritance of the sea-song and searching out an appropriate way toprotect it. |
