Nowadays, many scholars are states that Leo Tolstoy is a talented artist and agreat thinker, but they are almost ignoring a fact that he also is a soldier. Tolstoy’smilitary fiction is a significant part of his numerous works. On one hand, some ofthem are especially a vivid description of his military life. On the other hand, they arealso reflections of Russian soldiers’ world in literature. From1851to1854, Tolstoylived in the army four years, while the conquest demand of Russia, the influences ofhis military family and his dream to be a real hero, these three factors urged Tolstoy tojoin the army. After experiencing the battle of the Caucasus and the Crimean, Tolstoyhad not only produced a heavy introspection on the war, but also been touched by thepatriotism of soldiers and civilian. But the evils in the army forced him to leave thereat last. However this unique military life still had a great effect on Tolstoy’s literarycreation. It enriched the war materials of his literary creation, and promoted him toform a strong patriotism and a humanized outlook on war, he was also eager forestablishing the heaven of ground like the ancient China. What’s more, this militaryexperience was benefit for him to describe great battle scenes, build shockingnarrative mode, depict the real warlike conditions and portray plump flesh figures.This article is based on the Tolstoy’s military status, explores the effects whatthe four years military life produced on his literary creation from the points ofsynchronic and diachronic. This conclusion not only can enrich the identity study ofTolstoy and investigate into the real world of Russian soldiers, but also can make abasis understanding on the new type of war literature in modern Russia which startedby Tolstoy. The further research on Tolstoy’s military novels not only because thedeep thought and great art of the works, but also the reality demands of opposing thewar and fighting for peace. The study of Tolstoy military novels will remind the worldto make the peace become a reality by taking effective measures.
