One of the most difficult factors in translation is cultural heterogeneity, which therefore impacts the readability of the translation. How one can retain the original heterogeneous cultural elements as much as possible in literary translation, and also make translations attractive to the target language readers is a main challenge in foreign literary translation. On the basis of exploring South African colonial history, this article analyzes the different ways of language and thinking of the novel’s characters, as well as the heterogeneous syntactic and rhetoric art between original and target languages. Then the article further elaborates on how to balance of heterogeneity and readability in foreign literary translation by incorporating various translation theories, and puts forward specific translation strategies.
