There have been many voices in the translation critique circle about translation standards, yet fidelity still stays to be the primary aim of translation, and also the essential criteria to evaluate literature translation. In translation practice, many translators still regard fidelity as the utmost principle consciously or unconsciously. To fiction translation fidelity also applies, yet the more freedom in novelists’ choice of language and ways of expressing causes more trouble for translators to realize the goal of fidelity. The Opposite house is a post-colonial work, in which the writer Helen Oyeyemi vividly depicts the life of the immigrants in London and also the immigration of Orishas overseas. Post-colonial novels certainly have their own special characteristics in addition to the common features of novel and this poses more challenges to translators in language, style and culture. The otherness the author tries to instill in this novel should mean more difficulty for the translator to achieve fidelity. The great challenge to translate post-colonial works into Chinese does not mean more freedom for translators to re-create. The strategy of foreignization can ensure more foreign factors in the original works and enrich the targeted language and culture. Therefore, to achieve fidelity, translators should adopt literal translation under the guidance of foreignization The otherness in the rhetoric and images the author has adopted should be kept; the hybridity of languages in the original works should also be embodied in the translated version by keeping non-English languages; as for cultural factors, translators should completely follow the author by introducing foreign cultures to Chinese readers, thus showing the cross-cultural feature of post-colonial works. In translating the first two chapters of this novel, the translator has made her greatest attempt to achieve fidelity by adopting the strategy of foreignization. In particular, literal translation has been followed in dealing with the exact language and cultural factors. By translating The Opposite House literally, the translator has made much effort to demonstrate the features of the original work in terms of language, style and culture, in the hope of achieving fidelity.
