The Yangtze river, as one of China’s mother river which has special geographicalconditions and cultural significance,occupies an important position in ancient Chineseliterature. A large number of imagery poetry which contains the image of Yangtzeriver emerged in Tang dynasty. This kind of poetry bears the poets’ aesthetic andemotional aspirations. Although it is in a high quality, people are not serious enoughtowards it. This paper is focused on poetry images of the Yangtze river. I am trying toanalyse the culture background of the Yangtze river combing the rule of literatureitself and the poet’s emotion world. This paper starts with the natural quality, socialfuction and Ethnic folks. Then it looks for the profound connotation of poetry imagesof the Yangtze river. Except the introduction and conclusion part, this text is dividedinto four parts:The first chapter talks about drinking, irrigation, washing and the transportfunction of the Yangtze river. The Yangtze river water is "sweet" because of its"pureness". It is a good source of drinking water. The southern poets express theirhometown nostalgia when they were using water far from their hometown. Theirrigation function of Yangtze river got great development in Tang dynasty. TheYangtze river can not only remove dirt, keep the object clean, also it can wash off thedirt and sorrows out of people’s hearts. As the shipping fuction of Yangtze river hasbeen developed, more and more poets come here. They can be divided into threedifferent sorts: those who come for a visit; those who come because of being relegatedand those who is homeless because of the war. The Yangtze river provided not only anecessary help and guarantee for the life of people by enlarging the scope of people’sproduction and living, but also it has inspired the people to think about life and nature.It is no longer a simple river but an important image, which has become an importantpart of the Yangtze river civilization.The second chapter examines the Yangtze river from the perspective of folkwayand folk custom image. Introduced a special kind of residents in the Yangtze river:living in the boat. It can be divided into two categories, permanently living andtemporary dwelling; It discusses two activities which has unique characteristics of theregion of throttle. It talks about the jiangnan women aesthetics called “thin is beauty”. It analysis the popular mercantilist ethos in the Yangtze river region and the poet’sattitude towards businessmen. This chapter analysis the Yangtze image from the viewof customs to explore the essence of the Yangtze river civilization and its strongvitality.The third chapter mainly discusses the emotion reflected by the Yangtze image.It is the lovesickness and the hate of homeless. As an important traffic arteries, TheYangtze river witnessed the scene of departing, thus the poets like to express theirsadness about departing. Ever since the An Lushan Rebellion, many poets went tosouth. They express their homesickness, political feelings of sadness and carings forthe fate of their nation with the help of the image of the Yangtze river.The fourth chapter talks about the relationship between the image of Yangtzeriver and Taoist culture. The Yangtze river basin is given priority to with Taoistculture. It shows the resilience, poetic, romantic and profound of the Chinese nation.The poet’s feelings of hermit and nihilism included in the Yangtze river closelycontact Taoist culture of the Yangtze area.
