In her latest novel Home, published in May,2012, Toni Morrison locates herfocus on main characters’ identity pursuit.This paper employs the double consciousness by W. E. B. Du Bois to exploreidentity pursuit in Home. It is divided into five chapters:Chapter One gives a briefintroduction to the author Toni Morrison and Home; Chapter Two presents literaturereview and the significance of the study; Chapter Three gives an introduction to W. E.B. Du Bois and explains double consciousness and self-identity; Chapter Four gives adetailed analysis of identity pursuit in Home from three perspectives: escaping: loss ofself-identity, struggling: dilemma of self-identity, and returning: reconstruction ofself-identity; Chapter Five draws a conclusion.This paper tries to explore the influence of double consciousness on Frank, Cee,and Lily’s pursuit of self-identity and the differences of their self-identityconstructions, and draws a conclusion that Frank finally finds his true self by clearlynoticing and accepting his identity dilemma under double consciousness, Ceeaccomplishes self-identity construction in the end by accepting her identity dilemmaunder double consciousness and growing on her own without Frank’s help, and Lily’sjourney of self-identity pursuit ends in failure.
