J.R.R.Tolkien, an distinguished Oxford University professor who specialized inthe study of language development and early medieval literature. He has writtenfamous books like The Hobbits and The Silmarillion, but his literary reputationmainly rests upon his fantasy-romance novel, The Lord of the Rings. Since itspublication, the novel has got great popularity among western countries. It was evenselected as “ the most popular book in history”on line. As Hollywood director PeterJackson’s film The Lord of the Rings was filmed, a zealous love for “the magic ring”has wiped through out the world. No matter scholars or common enthusiasm readersboth show great passion for this novel. Archetypal analysis and the origin of myth inMiddle-earth, fantasy technique etc.have been widely used to review or interpret thetext of this novel. In this paper, I will not talk too much about these aspects, on thecontrary, based on the interpretation of the text, and under the guidance of Freud’spsychoanalytic literary criticism, the psychoanalytic analysis of the protagonist, thenthe author’s ecocriticism ideas will be achieved, which will have a significanceinfluence on modern people. In spite of introduction and conclusion, the body part will be divided into four parts:The introduction part will offer a general introduction concerning literaturereview and research methodology. The first chapter will give a general introduction to the author’s personal life, literary career, and war experience, so as to reveal relevant information conveyingauthor’s reason of creating a happy ending story.Through analyzing the main characters’ various psychological, behavioralchanges on the road of destroying The Ring, chapter two reveals the influenceself-redemption and nature redemption have on them.Based on the author’s hatred attitude toward war; concern for protecting nature, and views of kindness and evil, the third chapter presents the ecological attitude of theauthor. With the approach of psychoanalytical criticism and ecocriticism, the paper triesto argue that the three Hobbits can acquire happiness as long as they deal well withthe relationship with themselves and the society. Then, the paper endeavors to revealthe author’s ecocriticism that modern people from different cultures can livepeacefully and happily as long as they have have harmonious relationship with eachother and have concerns for preserving nature. Meanwhile, common people can alsopush the wheel of history as long as they code well with themselves and the society.
