An Analysis Of Two Chinese Versions Of The Lord Of The Rings:the Fellowship Of The Ring From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The Lord of the Rings is an epic novel written by J.R.R Tolkien,an English writer,linguist and professor at Oxford University.Since its release between 1954 to 1955,the novel has been deemed as the originator of the modern fantasy literature and one of the greatest works in the 20th century by the academia.Boasted with the strong imaginative background,beautiful language and positive motif,the book gains a worldwide welcome after its publication.The Skopos Theory was proposed by German functionalists in the 1970s.According to the Skopos Theory,translation should break the restrain of the source language(SL),source text and the author to serve particular purpose(s),so that the translation can serve the purpose(s)in the context of target culture.The thesis aims to analyze the most recognized translation of The Lord of the Rings:The Felloship of the Rings from the perspective of the Skopos Theory,point out the highlights of the two translation,provide suggestions for improvement based on the fundamental standpoints and the rules within the framework of the Skopos Theory.By comparing and analyzing the two translations,the thesis tries to.provide another angle for LOTR translation studies and contribute to the development of fiction translation in China.
