News plays an important role in everyday life, and it has become part of life. Headlines, the eye of news, have become more and more important to the modern society. Many scholars have analyzed the news headlines from the perspective of function, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, rhetoric, even stylistics, however, few of them have studied the rhetorical strategies used in the news headlines, and there are no scholar explore the rhetorical strategies used in the headlines of Legal Report. The rhetorical strategies are necessary to the headlines in order to attract audiences. A successful headline is usually illustrated with one kind of rhetorical strategy. Based on the lack of previous studies, this thesis attempts to propose the integrated CRE model under the frame of Cognitive Linguistics and Rhetoric, which is constructed from the ECM, context situation and rhetorical strategies. This model is used to explain the cognitive rhetorical mechanism with the aid of quantitative analysis from the corpus of 1276 news headlines collected from the Legal Report(2010-2013) of CCTV. The findings of this thesis are as follows:Firstly: the vast majority of news headlines choose to use rhetorical method, in which metonymy, hyperbole, metaphor, parody and contradictions have the highest frequency of use.Secondly: rhetorical strategies can be analyzed from the perspective of Cognitive Rhetoric. Rhetoric is not just a kind of tool, but also a cognitive method which can reflect people’s psychological thinking.Thirdly: the choice of rhetorical strategies is closely connected with the certain context. The profound interpretation of news is inseparable from context.The main contributions of the thesis are as follows:Firstly, this paper, for the first time, analyzes the cognitive mechanism under the frame of Cognitive Rhetoric, by proposing an integrated CRE model.Secondly, it is the first attempt to establish the corpus of new headlines of Legal Report and gives a statistic and classification of news headlines with the aid of data. Thirdly, this paper finds 13 kinds of rhetorical strategies which are usually used in the news headlines. At last, this chapter points out the limitations of the study and proposes suggestions for further study.
