Newspaper headline is a common linguistic phenomenon with great charm,which has not only aroused the interest of newspaper editors, but also that of linguists and rhetoricians. It is found that a large number of rhetorical headlines seem to have nothing to do with the news event they talk about, but in fact they are closely related to the news content and reflect the themes of news events accurately. Furthermore,these headlines usually give rise to some special effects: highlight the news theme;make the news headlines attractive and catchy; help kindle the imagination of readers;facilitate the interpretation of news headline. In recent years, although researchers have tried to probe into the meaning constructing process of news headline, efforts made from the perspective of Cognitive Rhetoric with convincing supporting data is expected.The research materials of this thesis are education related news headlines throughout 2014 selected from China Daily. The theoretical basis of this thesis are cognitive reference point and the Constural theory. The aim of this thesis is to establish a unified cognitive analyzing mode for rhetorical devices and to support that it is of significance to apply cognitive reference point and the Constural theory on news headline study.The CRM model, an integration of the cognitive reference point model and the Construal Theory is put forward to expound the underlying cognitive mechanism of rhetorical education related news headlines in China Daily under the frame of Cognitive Rhetoric. 13 kinds of rhetorical devices alongside with their case studies show rhetorical strategies are construal methods in which one experience is used to explain another and different salience on things bring in different focuses and rich expressions. On the other hand, since we are faced with the such similar environment we have much shared knowledge to be taken as cognitive reference point, which facilitates the interpretation of rhetorical strategies in news headlines.
