Creative Treason In Literary Translation-offset To The Limitation Of The Traditional Faithfulness

The traditional faithfulness has been the absolutely dominated principle in the field of translation theory for a long time. Most translators regard the faithfulness as the prime principle in their translation actions. Meanwhile, a large number of researchers who are working on the translation theory consider the faithfulness is the most important standard to evaluate the translation text. Because of the development of the research on the nature of the literary translation, the introduction of the foreign translation theory and the cultural turn in translation, there are many limitations of the traditional faithfulness applied to the literary translation. The thesis tries to find out the theoretical and practical method to offset its limitation, for the faithfulness is of great significance on the translation.The thesis firstly introduces the nature and characteristics of literary translation, the content of the traditional faithfulness and the relevant theory of creative treason, making a solid theoretical foundation for the following research. Secondly, the thesis theoretically states the limitation of the traditional faithfulness, with its reasons of how the creative treason offsets the limitation. In the next part of the thesis, it studies the difference and similarity between two translations of Vanity Fair based on the comparison and contrast about the translated sentences, which verifies the statements above from the microcosmic perspective.Through the research, the content of faithfulness has been updated. Faithfulness refers that the translation should be faithful to the literary characters, meaningful thoughts and aesthetics of the original text. The author has received a deep understanding on the relationship between faithfulness and creative treason. Actually, creative treason is a kind of more deeply faithfulness in literary translation. Both of them aim at obtaining good translations. Therefore, the necessity of the creative translation has been confirmed. Combined with the studies on the translation theory and practice, the author also tentatively puts forward the feasible principles and methods to deal with the problems encountered in the E-C translation for the reason that the translated literary works should be with readability. When doing literary translation, translators should pay more attention to giving full play to the advantages of the target language, completing the cultural transmission and achieving the fusion of aesthetic horizon. It is expected that the thesis will offer a reference to the novel translation researchers and fans and contribute to the research of E-C translation.
