As one of the classical representative works of Sishu, has attracted much interest since it completed.Zhongyong is a great work which accumulated the spirit of the Confucian school’s metaphysical.Because of the philosophy factors being included in it,makes Zhongyong controversial in a long time.In the history of Chinese Classics translation, the translated works of James Legge have been treated as classic. The study of Zhongyong English traslation seems inadequate to the Analects of Confucius and Mencius.Although in the limited number of Zhongyong English translation studies, mostly focus on the linguistic analysis, which result in ignoring the influences that the specific social and historical context how to impact on the translation. In Europe translation studies turn into cultural studies since 1980 s.Taking the advantage of Post-colonialism Theory to study the Zhongyong English translation is becoming popular. However, because of the defects of the Post-colonialism Theory and the misunderstand of it,the results of the research are not very satisfactory. This thesis take Andre Lefevere’s Manipulative Theory as a tool to study Legge’s Zhongyong English translation from the ideological perspective, the poetic perspective and the patron perspective. To do this can fill in the gaps of academic world, and promote the cultural exchange between Chinese and Western. The Manipulation Theory at the same time will be tested by the practice of translating study on Zhongyong English version.Besides, there’s a pity that most scholars ignored how the Pu-Xue in Qing Dynasty impacted on Legge’s translation, and this is fully discussed in the thesis.
