Combination of multiple words is an important element of the layout of the calligraphy. With the appearance of cursive font came the unique phenomenon in the cursive style of writing, which signified the maturity of the cursive writing, the combination of multiple words phenomenon matured as well. And the combination of multiple words has been universally acknowledged by modern calligraphers. This phenomenon, whose essence involves the "form" (space form and time form) of calligraphy, is the result of subject consciousness of calligraphers’ creation being emphasized and performed. This paper discusses the meaning, development and evolution course, essence and effect of cursive combination of multiple words, through which the author tries to study and probe into the aesthetic connotation and features. The author also discourses the form and performance of the cursive script in Chinese ancient cursive calligraphy according to its development of history. This paper focuses in the regular patterns of the combination of multiple words in four stages, namely, the cursive script of Jin dynasty before Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Jin Cao of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, wild cursive of Tang and Song dynasties and cursive script of the late Ming dynasty. It begin to analyze the form elements and cause of composition of combination of multiple words from the form and the composition of calligraphy. In the mean time, it also expounds the ways of combination between different combination of multiple words. This paper also discusses the extension and innovation of combination of multiple words in modern times from the theories of modern calligraphy and calligraphic works. The innovation and application of combination of multiple words in modern calligraphy exhibits and creation is given a new position in this paper.
