A Study On Zhang Yan And The Poetryof Du Fu

Du Fu is a great realistic poet in ancient China. From the mid-Tang Dynasty, Du Fu and his poetry had been a concern in the literary world. To the Song Dynasty, Thousands of authors noted Du Fu’s poetry. In the Qing Dynasty, studying Du’s poetry had become a kind of specialized knowledge.From Tang Dynasty to Song Dynasty, there were two periods when studying and noting Du’ s poetry reached its climax. One was in Tang Dynasty and another was in Song Dynasty. Between these two high tides, the study of Du’ s poetry in Ming Dynasty seems not that brilliant. The study in this period emphasized on selecting and commenting, and it’s inferior both in quantity and quality compared to the study in Song and Qing Dynasty. Although the Complete Annotation of Du’s Poetry was not much in quality, the selecting, noting and commenting of Du’s poetry in Ming Dynasty was distinctive.This thesis includes the following section:To study The Poetry of Du Fu should based on the study of the author, so this paper depicts Zhang Yan’s life at first by exploring his family background, social contact, travel experience and main works. After having an overall understanding of the author, the edition and writing course are discussed in detail. The most distinctive features of The Poetry of Du Fu are the style and feature of annotating the poetry of Du Fu. It makes the style special to adopt the way how Zhu Xi annotated Shi Jing Ji Zhuan which is compiled in chronological way but, compared with Zhu Xi, take the content of poems into account.
