A Study On The Vocabulary Of Unearthed Artifacts Inscriptions In Zhongshan State

Tombs of the Warring States of Zhongshan state were excavated at Pingshan County, Hebei Province in 1977, and about nineteen thousand pieces of cultural relics were found by archaeologists. Zhongshan Wang tomb unearthed a large number of artifacts with inscriptions,including bronze, weapons, money, stoneware, pottery, wood, lacquer characters. What’s more,the lengthy inscriptions on artifacts of Zhongshan Wang Ding, Zhongshan Wang pot, Yin Si pot,Zhaoyu map provide important information for the history study of Zhongshan state,which has turned out to be one of the most valuable discoveries of the Warring States since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China.Since Zhongshan artifacts have been unearthed, researches on characters, history, culture and other aspects have made some achievements, but researches on vocabulary were still insufficiency. Vocabulary study is an integral part of linguistic research,which can reflect the condition of the language at that time more real, and is extremely important for the study of Chinese history. Using the basic theory of Lexicology and the quantitative research methods according to the previous studies, this thesis makes a systematic research and description of Zhongshan state’s unearthed artifacts inscriptions, which provide basic reference materials for the study of the history of ancient Chinese vocabulary.There are four chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is an introduction. This part expounds the basis of the topic selection of this thesis and the research significance of Zhongshan state’s inscriptions, and from two aspects of the warring states period written vocabulary and unearthed artifacts of the Zhongshan State’s inscriptions research, briefly describes the general research situation of this topic, and makes some instructions for the selecting materials and vocabularies’ study of this article. The second Chapter is vocabulary classification study. This part lists, describes and analyzes the vocabulary of Zhongshan state by dividing them into categories of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. aiming at building an overall framework of Zhongshan state’s unearthed artifacts inscriptions’ vocabulary. The third chapter is vocabulary quantitative study. From the aspects of word frequency and calculation of different vocabularies, this part makes a study of Zhongshan state’s unearthed artifactsinscriptions vocabulary from different frequency of the words and different parts of speech to have a better understanding of the distribution of the use of various types of Zhongshan state’s unearthed artifacts inscriptions’ vocabulary. The fourth chapter is compound words study. From the aspects of quantitative analysis and structural analysis, this part presents the characteristics of polysyllabic of Zhongshan state’s vocabulary and even the Warring States’ vocabulary. In the end,there is a conclusion of this thesis, which gives a briefly summary and evaluation.
