More and more minority students study in the mainland coastal non-national colleges. For them, it not only means learning vision of and improvement, but also it hides the multiculturalbaptism and challenges. The minority freshmen’s adaptability directly affects their academic achievement and the future development, and relates to the quality of higher education in China.This study adopts qualitative research paradigm of construction grounded theory orientation, conducts in-depth interviewabout adaptability among 12 minority andHan nationality freshmen from two universities in Shanghaiwho have been admitted for half a year, and encodes the interview material for contrastive research.The main research conclusions are as follows:1.Minority freshmen are influenced by culture shock andhave slightly seriousadaptability problem than Han nationality ones;the adaptability of the former is dominated by "problem solving" stress response, while that of the latter is "development ability" focus. The minority freshmen living in multi-ethnos areas have better adaptability than the one from the concentrated areas of new nationalities2.Freshmen’s adaptability involves infour dimensions, namely,learningadaptation, interpersonal adaptation, self-reliance adaptation, as well as physical and mental symptoms.Minority freshmenhave more difficultiesin learningadaptability and interpersonal adaptability than the ones fromHan nationalitydue to many factors such as language barriers and closure, have more physical and mental symptoms reaction due to national culture personality factors; while self-reliance adaptability presents individual differences.3.Study pressure and mental confusion are the common factors of all kinds. Minority freshmen’s adaptability is mainly influenced by culture and attribution judgment, the adaptability of ones from Han nationality is mainly influenced byenvironment and personality traits. The respectively high consumption level and fast-paced way of lifeof Shanghai have important influence on the adaptability ofminority freshmen andHan nationality freshmen.4. Self-regulation and seeking outside support are the two major strategies by which freshmen adapt to pressure. Minority freshmen can enjoy minority national education preferential policy, which is beneficial to the improvement of their adaptability. In addition, they are also greatly influenced by religions. Han nationality freshmen are good at seeking interpersonal support to solve problems. All of them can pursue adaptive optimization on the basis of the good adaptation.5. The overall adaptability level does not show significant gender differences. The results of the study support androgyny model, namely,among. the colleges and universities in Shanghai, the individuals with higher scores both in masculine traits and feminine traits have higher adaptability.
