The primitive religion, with forms of worship in nature, animal, totem, and ancestry, originated from human spontaneous consciousness. But as the universal value that man is the measure of nature provided, people inspire their inner awareness from nature to self. They begin to reinvent themselves by abandoning the blind devotion of primitive worship.Chingiz Aimatov and Chi zijian both singularly have the humanitarian vision under the multi-ethnic surroundings, for they possess similar growing environment and cultural resources, and the devout totem worship mainly showed in state of nature attachment in their works. Different totems are demonstrated in accordance with ethnical culture: totems of fire, wolf and deer are commonly served in the nomad while the Mansu and the Nivkhi owned the totems of crow and fish respectively. Two writers both manifested the links of man and nature under the community of totem and individual. Meanwhile, there are two sorts of self in the construction of totem and individual revealed among two writers’ works: In Aitmatov’s works, the Kirghiz asserted the individual values under cruel nature through the compliment of integrity, manual labour, strong willing and confident, which reached a aesthetic self. In Chi’s, people were inclined to endure misfortune and suffering in concerned of the historical mission undertaking by natural totems, which reached a deified self. As the productivity arose, the meanings of totems were falsified in accompany with unilateral self-pursuing, two writers both mourned the capital decadence on the verge of humanity. The mental conflict caused by the detachment of totem worship and self actualization leads two tragedies: Characters in Aitmatov’s works tended to conquer nature for private greed through breaking the taboos intrigued self-inflation. However, characters in Chi’s chose to be sympathized to the weakness on account of awe and fear of totem resulted in self-destruction and showed compromise to human wickedness.
