It involves the two kinds of media forms of A Dream of Red Mansions——audio-visual media & printing media, and correspondingly, two text forms——film and TV text & novel text. This chapter provides the theoretical foundation of the following case study. The second and third chapters attribute to "case study", which aim to give an intensive reading of the 1987 version of the TV series A Dream of Red Mansions, and evaluate the recreation of novel text to TV text’s transform. In the second chapter, the author gave a discussion of usual adaptation of the 1987 version of the TV series A Dream of Red Mansions. In the third chapter, the author emphasized the personality of the adaptation of the 1987 version of the TV series A Dream of Red Mansions, which was an adaptation reviving the original intention of Cao Xueqin in the lost chapters. The main content is:the pandect of adaptation by reviving the original intention of Cao Xueqin in the lost chapters, and the widely criticized ending of the love story of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu as well as the highly acclaimed adaptation of Jia Tanchun bidding farewell to her relatives. The combination of these two chapters is the complete case study of the 1987 version of the TV series A Dream of Red Mansions.By means of the analysis of the above three chapters, the basic conclusion of this thesis is:There exists an impenetrable barrier of transform from novel text to TV text of A Dream of Red Mansions. Therefore, our criticism of film adaptation of A Dream of Red Mansions should be based on kindness and tolerance.
