Under the influence of western world, many cities in China had been slowly on the course of urban modernization since the end of the 19 th century and the early twentieth century. During the process, the foreigners who came to China played a huge role in promoting modernization in Chinese city. Chengdu is an inland city in southwest of China and its traffic was inconvenience. Although it was relatively backward, it still had some achievements in Urbanization Development. The Americans occupies the important position in the construction and management of municipal facilities of modern Chengdu, their activities objectively made a certain contribution to the urban modernization of Chengdu, and it also objectively affected the Sino-us relations.Sino-us relations has been one of important bilateral relationship in the world. After the two countries established trade relations in 1978, with the development of Sino-us economic and trade relations, folk cultural exchanges between the two countries also gradually happened and the contact was increasingly frequent. The first American missionaries in China as a bridge played a very important role. After the establishment of the republic of China, there were all kinds of communication between China and the United States, which made the two country more closely. The communication is not limited by the boundaries of the "mission", also in the learning which included all aspects of social development between writers, scholars and experts, the construction of urban modernization was one of the communication. As one of the most important city in southwest of China, Chengdu was certainly no exception.In this paper, the author studied the activities of Americans in the construction and management of municipal facilities of modern Chengdu from 1901 to 1973. Through this study, it will be more comprehensive to investigate the Americans’ work and life, especially for their understanding about China and the relationship with the local Chinese people. In this paper, the author examined the exchange and collision in culture between the two countries by the new perspective of the city municipal construction of the modernization, be aimed at analyzing carefully the impact of the United States to China, and researching objectively the history and development of the civil relations between the two countries.
