Research On The Construction Of Urban Language Landscape Before The Chengdu Universiade

Linguistic landscape is the collection of all kinds of language signs which are displayed in public space of urban city,and the research heat has been increasing in recent years.Under the background that the 2021 FISU Summer World University Games will be held in Chengdu,which is an international comprehensive sports event with great significance in southwest China,this paper takes the linguistic landscape before Chengdu Universiade as the research object,and aims to discuss the construction of linguistic landscape before important sports competition start.From the perspective of local residents and temporary visitors,four research scenes have been chosen,such as landmark scene,commercial scene,tourism scene and cultural scene.Within the range of the First Ring Road in Chengdu,Four areas marked Chengdu characteristics have been selected as the research space.They are Tianfu Square-Yanshikou area,Chunxi Road-Taikoo li area,Jinli Alley and Kuanzhai Alley,Chengdu Museums,Chengdu City Concert Hall and Chengdu Sports Center.By field investigation corpus has been collected through taking photos.By consulting documentation corpus on the internet also has been collected.According to the principle of linguistic landscape classification,the collected language materials have been classified as the following seven physical types: posters,shop window displays,exhibition boards,decorative paintings,banners,store signs,and another type,as well as network linguistic landscape which is a form of non-physical linguistic landscape.Referring to the SPEAKING analysis model of linguistic landscape construction,the paper defines five analysis dimensions(including background,contents,audience,function and policy)for linguistic landscape before FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021.Based on research of the five dimensions it has been discussed how Chengdu organized and constructed pre-game linguistic landscape.For the dimension of background,the linguistic landscape before Chengdu Universiade has diversity in horizontal plane distribution and extension in vertical space.The setting of linguistic landscape takes diversified genres into account and put the different genres in appropriate geographical locations,According to the characteristics of different scenes,various types of linguistic landscape has been created.For the dimension of contents,the linguistic landscape before Chengdu Universiade has been formed in texts and pictures,including the official visual pictures and the other pictures and texts.The official visual picture is based on a unified style through the change of text contents for reaching the demand of classification and individualization.While due to no restriction of the other pictures and texts,their contents and design elements are diversified,and there are great differences between styles.However,no matter what kind of contents has been used,Chinese occupies a dominant position.English and other languages,as the translation of Chinese,symbolically appear on the official visual pictures and official website.It shows that the symbolic meaning is more significant than the practical value.For the dimension of audience,the influence of linguistic landscape on temporary visitors is more obvious than local residents,which leaves good impression on audiences by the reasonable design with characteristics of Chengdu Universiade.Moreover,different audience holds preference on diversified linguistic landscape,and those designed elaborately are more popular.At the same time,during the face to face interview some problems are found,such as some information has been misread and the others do not meet the reading demand etc.For the dimension of function,the linguistic landscapes have been realized two major functions: information function which delivers information of the Games and services,and cultural function which comprehend the culture of Chengdu and culture of Universiade.By the chance of Universiade,Chengdu encourages its people to participant in sports.For the dimension of regulation,from national laws,local ordinances and competition regulations three aspects: to study whether the construction of linguistic landscape pre-competition is in line with the principle of compliance.Through the study,it is found that the contents and setting of the linguistic landscapes are in accordance with national and local laws and ordinances,and protected by the intellectual property rights regulation of the Universiade.In conclusion,the overall construction of linguistic landscape is appropriate,but some disadvantages such as wrong written characters,important information misdisplay and too broad contents still have space for improvement.For the construction of the further period,this paper suggests that it should firstly increase the types and quantity,especially to motivate the enthusiasm of citizens to build more innovation linguistic landscape.Secondly,it is necessary to enrich the contents,by raising bilingual and even multilingual use frequency,and providing more competition detail information.Finally,the responsible department should correct and standardize disadvantages of the current linguistic landscape as soon as possible,so that the linguistic landscape can provide more professional services for the Games.
