This is a translation project report for a section of Chapter Five from Handbook of Natural Language Processing and Machine Translation. This book is contributed by researchers of Global Autonomous Language Exploitation(GALE)Program conducted by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA),containing a series of conceptions, strategies and approaches of language processing, automated translation research and system development used in the program and part of its achievements. A number of conceptions and evaluation criteria among them were initiated by GALE and had been tested and applied in large scale, making this book a leading indicator in artificial intelligence research and MT system evaluation. Therefore, translating this book into Chinese is significant to the breakthrough of related techniques and general development of Chinese MT industry. This report, based on Newmark’s classification of textual functions, discusses the effect of his Communicative Translation theory on scientific translation and application in this translation project; analyzes the property, characteristics and style of the original text; summarizes the encountered translation difficulties such as nominalizations, passive voices, special words and structures; and describes main translation methods of words conversion, syntactic reordering and adjustment of the original meaning. This report consists of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction about the project, book and elected part. Chapter two describes the translation processes of preparing, text analyzing and proofreading. The third chapter discusses the application of Newmark’s Communicative Translation theory in this project.Chapter four is about the translation difficulties and the cases studies of translation methods.
