Rise of Planet of the Apes is a 2011 American science fiction film, which is20 thCentury Fox’s reboot of the Planet of the Apes series. The film tells a story about chimpanzees evolve into advanced intelligent creatures and the encounters before they occupy the earth. The theme of the film contains the cautioning significance:human’s mad desires will result in serious consequences. This film won Annie Award for Character Animation in a Live Action Production and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The thesis analyzes the film from the perspective of ecological criticism and discusses the ecological thought in this film.By analyzing the film, the thesis intends to argue that the harmony between human beings and nature can be realized by insisting on ecological holism.The thesis is divided into five parts, and the main body will be logically divided into three chapters. The first part is an introduction about the background,ecological research status of the film, the research method and innovative points of this thesis. The first chapter of the main body reveals that Anthropocentrism is the origin of ecological crisis by analyzing several characters and the plot. The second chapter analyzes the relationship between human beings and nature from the point of spiritual ecology. Because of the limitless extension of human’s desires, the unbalance of human and nature has appeared. Even the world of animals suffers a great deal from the unbalance. The third chapter analyzes the film from the point of ecological holism, and argues that humans and nature can benefit from the harmonious relationship between human beings and nature. Thus it is important to maintain a harmonious relationship. At last, the conclusion provides a comprehensive view.
