Nowadays, the demand of talents in our country increases with the acceleration of globalization, and comes with higher requirements. Art students, as a group of talented people, should keep pace with the times and strengthen their ability of English use. However, due to the low effectiveness of college English teaching and not enough environment of communication in class, art students’ English develops slowly during the two-year college English study. It is inevitable to set up the follow-up college English courses. Since the study of the follow-up college English course design is just in its start-up step in our country, and such study is less for art students, it is extremely necessary for us to discuss it.Based on the theory of needs analysis, and employing the methods of literature research, survey and case study, this thesis firstly gives a study of the background, current situation, problems and causes of college English courses for art students in our country. Next, the author gives an analysis on the follow-up college English courses, including their present situation, necessity as well as the impacts of related factors. In the process, a survey was given to the teachers and students respectively, who were selected randomly from Sichuan International Studies University, Wuhan University and Wuhan Conservatory of Music. The data was collected by personal interviews and questionnaire. Then based on the investigation of the needs of society, schools and students, the author offers some suggestions for the follow-up college English course design for art students in our country: 1) to set up English courses and specialized courses reasonably; 2) to attach great importance to the integration of English and specialized knowledge; 3) to pay attention to the needs of students and their career; 4) to attach great importance to the cohesion and transition of each English course; 5) to promote the teacher’s quality and to renew the teaching material as well as teaching methods.The dissertation attempts to attract more scholars to care about college English teaching of art students, solving the problem of art students’ nonstop of four-year college English study in our country, thus stimulating students’ interest in English learning and improving the efficiency of English teaching as well as students’ English skills.
