Since the ninety’s of last century, our country has put the cultivation of students’ comprehensive cultural quality as an important indicator of the national education reform, that is to pay attention to the cultivation of students’ General Education. College English is a significant part of cultivating college students’ general education, as a language and culture course, a survey of English-speaking countries course is the most common seen course that people choose to cultivate students’ general education in English for general education curriculum. This study introduces the background, significance and methodology of the research in the first chapter. By reviewing National Medium and long term education reform and development plan for 2010-2020 the author realizes the macro instructional objective and realizes the importance of cultivating students’ general education and students’ thinking development. After combing related references and the relationship between general education and college English, A Survey of English-speaking Countries course seems to be a feasible way to cultivate students’ general education. After investigating the present teaching situation of this course and combing the previous literature in the second chapter, the author generalizes the teaching objectives of this course according to the macro teaching objectives and the course requirement, then comes to a conclusion that the flipped classroom could partially solve the limitation in the past teaching practice and achieve the teaching objectives of this course. An introduction to the flipped classroom teaching mode and its theory base will be presented in chapter three to lay a solid theoretical foundation for this research. The innovation and the major part of this study will be shown in chapter four; the author designs a “two bidirectional circles” flipped classroom teaching mode which closely coincides the teaching objectives in five dimension of A Survey of English-speaking Countries course, and the factors that may influence the effectiveness of applying flipped classroom teaching mode such as technical supports and learning activities management are also elaborated, thus to hope to provide an useful sample for readers to carry out the flipped classroom teaching for this course.
