Alice Munro’s works are simple and exquisite, accurately grasping the atmosphere and rhythm of the story. She portrays the original side of real life with simple words to express people’s profound and sincere emotion. Similar to William Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, female characters in Munro’s stories live in a small town which is seemingly quiet but hides all sorts of conflicts and paradoxes. They are intelligent, sensitive women whose spiritual life is full of troubles. Shifting between time and memory, they grow to be mature in the course of life. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the unique narrative strategy of Alice Munro’s works through her two stories “Carried Away” and “passion” by feminist narratology. This paper first introduces the writer Alice Monroe’s life, two stories “Carried Away” and “Passion”, as well as research areas and feminist narrative theories at home and abroad. The first chapter reveals female personal voice with the application of spacial stance, psychological stance and free indirect speech from Susan Lanser’s theory. The second chapter explores the author’s authorial voice from temporal stance and phraseological stance. The third chapter reveals the communal voice of women through the analysis of female identity and ideological stance. Through analyzing the narrative strategy of feminist narratology in the Munro’ stories, this thesis intends to unravel feminist theme by manifesting how Munro’s female characters experience psychological journey to fight to pursue freedom and happiness in conventional sexual roles and achieve independence and maturity in an almost senseless, inexplicable and complex modern world.
