Sai Jinhua is an important literary figure in the history of Qing literary. Based on her life experiences, writers describe her as a prostitute who violates traditional ethics and a patriot who protect her country. Among the various works, “Nie Hai Hua”,written by Zeng Pu, has the greatest influence. As people hold various views to Sai Jinhua, she becomes a controversial presence and enjoys a mixed reputation. Limited by the times, narrative perspectives, moral ethics and writing abilities, every writer describes a different image, which gives birth to an interesting “Sai Jinhua literary phenomenon”. This represents the writer’s own standpoints and also has connections with national notions.In the history of literary, the study to Sai Jinhua has lasted nearly one century. In this case, the paper gives the concept of “Sai Jinhua literary phenomenon”, demonstrates its objectivity through the overview of the works in the beginning of 20 century,1930 s and 1990 s, analyses the contradictory characters of Sai Jinhua based on “Nie Hai Hua” written by Zeng Pu, discusses the background of the image from various prospectives through the comparison with“Sai Jinhua”written by Liu Bannong and Shang Hongkui and explains the development of the study to the literary phenomenon according to Zhao Shuxia and Wang Xiaoyu’s works. The paper aims to solve these problems as follows. First, why so many writers devote to the study of Sai Jinhua and what are their time-backgrounds?
