The film the Ten commandments can be seen as a turning point in the career of the Polish film master Kieslowski. This paper tries to demonstrate the ethics- love and death- implied in this film through the perspective of narrative ethics. Specifically, the paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is introduction, including three parts. Through the first part discussing the current state of Kieslowski’s film researches both domestically and externally, I found that the studies are relatively few. The second part discusses the academic and application values of this paper, which I hope can make up academic losses and be meaning for the domestic film industry. In the third part, critical methods used in this paper will be listed detailedly. The second chapter discusses the relation between the film and the changes in Kieslowski’s works. The changes may from the emphasize on political field to the metaphysical thinking on daily life. The Ten commandments can be seen as a transitional work. These changes have two features: one is that type of film is turned from documentary film to feature film, the other one is that creating style is turned from documentary to expressionism. The third chapter discusses the phenomenological narration in this film. Paper tries to apply the three main methods of phenomenology- suspension; returning to real world; returning to description or language- into discussion. In order to establish the theoretical base for the later discussion, first I give the brief statement on the spirit of phenomenology, then I put emphasize on the phenomenological narration by defining its connotation. At last, how the phenomenological narration works and what effect it brings will be elaborated. The fourth chapter is closely combined with the third chapter, after all, narration and ethics has interaction relations, the phenomenological narration in this film imply certain ethical tendency, so this chapter introspects modern ethics on the basis of the phenomenological narration: love is difficult and death is vanity.Based on the four chapters discussed above, the fifth chapter declares the film the Ten commandments has the model significance to the Chinese film industry. The paper reveals the main abuses in domestic film industry: the lack of the narrative skills, humanistic care, the social responsibility consciousness and excessive entertainments. Based on the current situation, Kieslowski’s film comes in handy. It should be said that the fifth chapter which reveals realistic meanings is a summary of the above four chapters.Above all, the academic value of this papers exists in the analysis on the phenomenological narration and ethical introspection based on this narration. Besides, the application meaning lies in the statement of advantages in film-making on account of disadvantages of current domestic film industry.Basing on the real life, implying humanistic concern and philosophical thinking about modern ethics, Kieslowski’s film the Ten Commandments maintains its special fascination and will last forever.
