The Season Narratives And Cultural Connotation Of Ba Jin’s Novels

Time and space are the basic existing form of everything. In literature studies, those two important dimensions can never be ignored. In the sense of novel narrative, time is extremely important. Studying on this special view angle has been a tradition in the western world, while China also has it own development. In the Chinese traditional concept of universe, time is extremely valued, bases on which Chinese novels have formed their own relatively stable narrative characteristics. Within the category of time, seasonal time shows on the objective flows and change of spring, summer, autumn and winter; and physical spaces appear together with the phenological law; at the same time seasonal rhythm and life sign being combined together and substantive humanistic spirit is showed. The most concrete example would be expressing the moral emotion that commonly influences people through literatures. There are many narratives of seasons within the Chinese ancient literatures, and they take an important role also in modern literature. Ba Jin, as an important figure of Chinese modern literature, uses methods of season narrative in a prominent way. The season expression being mixed with the emotional expressions have become one of the basic value attributes of the novels’structure formation and thought expression. Narrative of seasons emphasizes on taking spring, summer, autumn and winter as important narrative time line, and shows the value form of individual life consciousness through their flow and change moved in circles. Season has both forms unifying time and space, the author adopted the seasonal narrative method, and built comprehensive narrative structures of novels. During the literature review and study on the system of novels by Ba Jin, we may find the narrative background of seasons flowing and changing. Season has become not only the time basis of story of the novels, but also the systematic expression of the novels’image structure. Realistic style and impressionistic style come together while practice and experience correspond to each other. This three-dimensional abundant narrative form not only brings the culture connotation and implication to the novels and also expands the products’narrative tension and philosophical value.This paper bases on the Chinese traditional season expressions and the "narrative of season" concept brought up by other scholars, and researches on the novels’text expression and the author’s ideas of composition. The paper consists of three parts, including the introduction part, the main body and the conclusion. It mainly focuses on the types, structural functions and cultural connotations of seasons, and hereby explains the seasonal narrative form and aesthetic significance of Ba Jin’s novels.The introduction part introduces the current research situation of this topic, and explains the concept of "narratives of seasons" and its characteristics.The main part consists of three chapters:The first chapter begins with the time unit of season narratives, discusses the narrative and application of season in this article, explains the relationship between seasonal sequence & phonological phenomenon and the text expression, grasps systematically the from characteristics of seasons in Ba Jin’s novels and hereby reveals the important relationship between season and narratives, and sets up the logical basis of this paper.The second chapter starts with the internal analysis of the novel’s text, discusses in details the strategy and method of seasonal narratives used by author in the text, and summarizes the significance of seasons on the spreading of plots and characterization of figures in the novel, mainly analyzes the looping structure and image system of seasons, and explains in a new level the narrative form of Ba Jin’s novels.Based on the season narrative logics of text structure, the third chapter analyzes the active factors of seasonal narratives in the novel, discusses the hidden meaning of season wording system and individual life value, and expresses the philosophical significance and literature spirits of narrative of seasons.The conclusion part briefly discusses the narrative of seasons in regard to Ba Jin’s novels, generally clarifies the deficiencies in the analysis the paper and illuminates the importance of the novel’s narratives of season.
