Charles Dickens is generally recognized as a realistic writer who displays deep concern for social realities; however, his pioneering contributions to detective fiction remain largely ignored. The present author argues that in the incipient stage of detective fiction, Dickens’s bold explorations in the sub-genre are significant for the modeling of it. His detective stories, independent or as embedded in his social novels are seminal. The present author studies Dickensian detective fiction paradigms and the embodied moral, elaborating obvious affinities between Dickens’s craft with that of his contemporaries, including Edgar Allan Poe, William Wilkie Collins and those belonging to the later generations, such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, P. D. James, etc. Dickens’s exceptional innovations indicate that his remarkable achievements in the field sufficiently make him an entitled forerunner of modern detective fiction.
