Claude Debussy has done an extraordinary work on western musical history, which due to he has created the unique musical style. However, it is the main reason that he has become is the originator and the representative of musical impressionism. He is the one person who has emphasized the importance of the acoustics and the whole effect of musical expression. "L’isle Joyeuse", has created in 1904, this is one of his important and valuable musical pieces, which includes several representative techniques and many performance skills. Significantly, through this original work we can understand that it has a great contribution on technical method of piano studies, because he was highlighted the importance of combination of musical expression, tones, skills, and effects. It could be the most crucial musical work that has changed the western musical style and led the western music to become mature.Presently, the research and study has barely begun to make a dent in "L’isle Joyeuse" in China, but it is extremely important that to understand his musical performance and piano skills. In this report, it will focus on this valuable musical work-"L’isle Joyeuse", and analyze performance techniques and skills. In first chapter, it will describe the background and characters; in second chapter will explain the relationships between "L’isle Joyeuse" and impressionism; third chapter will analyze this musical work, firstly, it will find the key issue of performance, and examine the structure and give some advices for how to handle the different rhythms. Furthermore, it will analyze the performance through different ways, such as tone, rhythm, harmony, and melody, which could be a feasible proposal to solve the performance problems. Finally, it also will mention the method that how to use soft pedal when playing "L’isle Joyeuse", because soft pedal is an important skill when present a piano piece. The fourth chapter will concentrate to make some suggestions for the difficult techniques of "L’isle Joyeuse", especially will focus on the expressions of emotion.
