Frequent effective diplomatic activity is the important manifestation of a country being proactively into the international community and enhancing the communication with other countries. In this process, as one of the publicity tools, the function and role of diplomatic speech is self-evident, and it is also significant for national leaders to improve the ability of political communication under cultural context. As an art of language, diplomatic speech is more formal and serious than the language used in daily communication, and the speakers pay more attention on the methods and strategies particularly. Meanwhile, what makes diplomatic speeches special is that there are huge differences between speakers and audiences in political systems and culture traditions. Faced with the different audiences from different countries, regions and identities, speakers express different content and adopt different discourse strategies, which will leave an impact on realizing the political intention and achieving political communication effects. Applauding is one of the manners for the audience to express recognition and support at the scene, so it can be considered as criteria for evaluating the direct effect of the speech on a specific level. In this paper, recent diplomatic speeches of Chinese national leaders are collected and organized, then using applause as the evaluation index, we will analyze and summarize discourse strategies which can win more applause from the audiences, in order to provide some useful lessons to improve the level of national leaders’ political dissemination communication.
