Interpretation Strategies Of Cultural Default In The Diplomatic Speech In Light Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Today, mankind has entered the era of globalization. The interpersonalrelationship norm has reached its “being able to surpass the bounds of time and space”stage, which would never have been thought possible in the past. By constantlyblending with one another, various ideas and cultures are colliding drastically duringthis era and the exchange among different cultures has been closer than ever before. Itis under such background of the age greater importance is attached to speech right. Soto speak, diplomatic speech has always been at the forefront of the political,economical and cultural communication. Compared with other types ofcommunication, its role is pivotal and its impact is unparalleled. It goes withoutsaying that to study diplomatic speech is of immense significance. Hence, the study ofdiplomatic speech deserves due attention from researchers and the academia.One of the major difficulties in doing interpreting diplomatic speech is how tofind the words and expressions most compatible with the target audience, withoutlosing the essence of the speech in Chinese or distorting the information to beconveyed. One of the main reasons for communication barriers is the existence ofcultural defaults between the source language-culture and the target one. Throughanalyzing and summarizing, the cultural defaults that exist in diplomatic speechinterpretation can be sorted into four types:1) Words and Expressions EmbodyingChinese Culture Connotations;2) Words and Expressions Related to the NationalConditions;3) Poems and4) Idioms. And then through the analysis of the diplomaticspeech interpretation, the author sums up the possible compensation methods. Thestrategies are mainly divided into two groups.1) The structure dose not needs to beadjusted and2) the structure needs to be adjusted. In group1, only the literal translation can be adopted. In group2, strategies include free translation,complementary translation, omission and simplify can be employed.The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One illustrates the backgroundand the main problem of the study. Chapter Two presents an overview of FunctionalEquivalence. Chapter Three describes separately the diplomatic speech and thecultural default and points out four types of the cultural defaults. Chapter Fourfunctions as the main body of the thesis. In this part, proposes several methods ofcompensation. In last Chapter, limitations and further studies were summarized anddiscussed.
