The Wealth of Nations’, as the economic classic for over a century, has received no comparative study on these Chinese versions:translated by Yan Fu, Guo Dali and Wang Yanan, and Hu Changming. Based on the western translation theories of ’Destruction’ and ’Manipulation’, this dissertation gives comparative thoughts on the translation methods of the three versions in different periods in terms of translators’ will on translation works. The ’translators’ will’ in this dissertation means a will impelling translators to manipulate works. Besides the influence made by social ideology, we ought to pay attention that any translation is the result of the interactive influence of ideology and will. The first chapter discusses how Yan Fu expressed his will through his translation version. In the precarious situation in the late Qing Dynasty, Yan Fu called for the salvation of the country. The ’An Yu’ in his works is ’the sound of translators’, reflecting Yan Fu’s will on opposing government’s interference, valuing the construction of railways, encouraging commerce and promoting education. The four-word expressions reveal his manipulation and pursuit of aesthetics. The second chapter analyzes the faithful translation of Guo Dali and Wang Yanan. Leading by the spirits of May 4th. Movement, the translators not only take translation as a window open to strengthening Marxism, but also a carrier for inspiration. The split of long sentences and the reservation of logics and emotion all considered the faithfulness and normativity of translation. By listing economic words, we find that their cautious attitude offers the best way for readers to understand the original works. The third chapter makes a profound study on how Hu Changming applies ’Amplification’,’Reduction’ and ’Compilation’under the background of ’Chinese Dreams’ in the 21st century. We know the great rejuvenation needs the guidance of culture. Hu uses simple clear words to popularize economic knowledge to readers by his will, bringing benefits to most readers.
