During Daoguang Period of Qing Dynasty, with the expansion of cultivated land, large-scale irrigation agriculture sprang up in Yeke Juu, Ulayancab-un Ciγulγan, Guihua-du Sayuysan Tumed Qosiyu within Inner Mongolia at Yellow River upstream. The channelization-centered activities here by the businessmen who had been operating land-lease is noteworthy. After the eight main canals being built, agriculture developed to a new level, having effects on Mongolian Banners’ traditional livelihood. Subsequently in the Republican China Period when unrest and riots occurred frequently, Mongolian people had a harder time, especially after water rights being handed over to the government.The thesis consists of three parts:preface, main body and conclusion.The preface is an introduction to significance of the research, study review, basic literature used and the research approaches.In the main body, there are three chapters altogether. The Chapter One is titled "Agriculture and Water Conservancy of Hetao Area of Yellow River in Qing Dynasty", which includes the basic information concerning slackened Cultivation Prohibition Policy of Qing Government, general condition of canals within Hetao Area of Yellow River, and representatives of channelization. The Chapter Two is named as "Water Conservancy and Mongolian Banners within Hetao Area of Yellow River in Late Qing Dynasty (1825-1911)", which elaborates the conflict between agriculture and nomadic herding caused by channelization, and analyzes its impact on Mongolian Banners based on relevant historical records. The Chapter Three is designated as "The Canals and Mongolian Banners within Hetao Area of Yellow River in the Republican China Period (1912-1949)", which gives general description regarding channelization during the Republican China Period, and illustrates the economic and social changes on Mongolian Banners.The conclusion makes a brief summary.The thesis is based on multiple research approaches ranging from historical literature study, historical geography study to the dialect method so as to elaborate the channelization within Hetao Area from Late Qing Dynasty to the Republican China Period and analyze its effects on Mongolian Banners.The academic innovation of this paper is to add new content to the study of water conservancy in Hetao area, which distinguishes itself from any other perspectives existing in this field, such as the process of channelization, organizers of channelization, canals managing or ecological influence on this region.
