City And Country In Yan Lianke’s Novels And His Psychology Of Creation

Yan lianke, as a distinctive existence in Chinese literary world of today, creates a country world with distinct peculiarity in his novels. The country world is not a " Utopia ", which is created by Shen congwen and Jia pingwa, neither a poor but idyllic world, which is most authors thought it be. In Yan lianke’s novels the country is fall of dark, suffering, privation and distress, the traditionally idyllic portrait vanished, instead of the exhibition of peasant’s extremely harsh life. His describe, like cemetery, make the country world be a truly wilderness. The country is far away and against the city. There is much food for thought of Yan lianke’s attitude towards to the city. Yan lianke said he adored the city in his early age, and he always exhibited the protagonists,who were in suffering, yearn for the city. Did not had discontentment and criticism to modern civilization. But it is quite different in his later period novels, in these novels he use fables to praise peasant’s rebel spirits, set the city against the country in moral, criticize the modern civilization. It is noteworthy that:what Yan lianke criticize is the city unconcern, reject and impair to the country, not like other writers criticize the degenerating, decadent of civilization, literary creation is a secret way to express the writers’inner mind. The author’s character, life suffering, literary pursue, some kind of mood which maybe even the writer don’t find out himself, would hide in literary creation. Yan lianke try to portray’suffering country’and " indifferent city " in his works. This thesis will use Yan lianke’s novels, essays, conversation records etc, combine with author’s experience, identity traits, character etc, to analyze the author’s psychology basis behind the literary creation.This thesis consist by two parts, the first part is a summary of the features of the country and the city in Yan lianke’s works. Chapter one is aim to making a generally describe and conclude of the " distress country ", based on Yan lianke’s novels. In Yan lianke’s early works he exhibited the " distress " from three aspects:lack of materials, bully of authority, shackles of mores. With age and experience growing, Yan lianke’s describe do not limit to the village of west Henan. He set the country in the background of Agricultural civilization, use the form of fables to exhibit the cry and expect of country society. The nature of country:deformity appear in his describe. As far as the time concerned, the city goes though changes in three aspects:idealize, desire, indifference. The poverty of county lead to peasant longing and glorify to the city. But when peasant come to the city, their dreams broken. They become the bottom of the city, do dirtiest and weariest work, bear the discrimination from the citizen. They suffer torment both physical and mental. What is hided behind the prosperity is the city’s ignore and reject to the county. The second part of this thesis study on the inner drive that is creation psychology of Yan lianke’s works. It includes three points. Initially, the influence of childhood on his writings. It mainly act as stubborn convey the theme of suffering, including starvation, illness, death etc. These extreme experience can be found everywhere in his novels, even become horrifying. This is the process and reappear his suffering childhood life. Secondly, it is the " inferiority " that is one of the most important psychology traits determine Yan lianke’s creation direction. The experience of adolescent period and special identity:born and grow up in county but work in city, make Yan lianke lost in " inferiority of hick ". " Inferiority ",in one hand, can make him fell different kinds of thoughts of peasant in Henan, in the other hand, it limit the author’s creation. He can not get out of the awareness of hick, to surpass the " Inferiority ". Lastly, we study on the anxious mood of Yan lianke. There are two things Yan lianke worry about. The first one is identity lost. Yan lianke has a complex feeling toward to his country, he miss it, hate it, betray it, stick to it. He thirst for leaving it, but when he face to the wandering life which the modern city life bring to him, he has to eager to go back. From evading county to evading city, Yan lianke is trying to seek his position. All of his works show a mood that is consist by anxious, noisy, hesitate, helpless. The second one is worry about county’s current situation. In Chinese county, the traditional moral is degradation under the wave of market economy. Money worship, lead a life of pleasure is popular. Face up to desire, peasant lost basic judge of moral worthy. County become chaos and disorder. Many Yan lianke’s works express this anxiety, directly.
