This paper is set in a special period of the early 17 years since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (1949-1966). Based on the publication situation of journals on Chinese opera across the country within the timeframe, this paper aims to, by introducing development history of such journals, sum up development features of these journals, and dive into the correlations between the opera journal development and the implementation of seventeen-year opera reform. Starting from the origin of Chinese opera journals, Chapter 1 briefs the development history of modern and contemporary journals on Chinese opera and sorts out a good deal of opera journals issued during the 17 years to identify their significance. Chapter 2 discusses the publication situation and opera journals during this period from the perspective of "elimination of adverse factors in opera, remolding of thoughts and reform of unreasonable systems" in the first phase of opera reform. Through research on forewords to journals, this chapter analyzes the internal relations of contents of these forewords and the development course of opera, studying how adapted traditional operas implicate contents of opera journals. Chapter 3 focuses on the opera development situation and features of forewords in the second phase of opera reform featured by "one wonderful performance survives the life of a type of opera". In addition, this chapter also expounds the opera reform of this period when new historical plays achieved a strong foothold. Chapter 4 studies the relations between journals on Chinese opera and opera reform in the third phase of opera reform known as "transformation from modern opera-dominated period to the common development period of traditional play, modern opera and new historical plays". After sorting out the forewords to journals published during this period, it also analyzes relevant articles on modern opera published on journals, and points out the development direction of modern drama creation.
