Reporting speech takes a large proportion of news discourse. On one hand, this reveals the objectivity of news reports, enhancing the credibility. On the other hand, it is an implicit way to express the reporter’s stance and viewpoints. Reporting speech is the quotation of others’ words or information without personal opinion. But the choice of reporting speech and how to report is determined by the reporter, or by whether the reporting speech can support reporter’s viewpoints. So it seems objective, but the ideology is hidden behind the words. Reporting modes, news source, and the reporting verbs can influence the comprehension and the stance of news consumers. Thus finding out the relationship between the reporting verbs and ideology can help the readers to understand the reality objectively. There is a lot of research on reporting speech. But most studies the reporting structure and the usage of reporting verbs. Little has been done on comparative analysis on reporting verbs in Chinese and English news reports and the relationship between reporting verbs and ideology. This thesis adopts the news reports about Diaoyu Islands disputes as the data, about which the attitudes and stances of China and the USA are quite clear. The research purpose is to find out how similarities and differences are reflected in reporting verbs utilized by China Daily and the New York Times and why. Besides, the study tries to reveal the relationships between reporting verbs and ideology. This study is a comparative analysis on reporting verbs in Chinese and English hard news from the perspective of CDA. The research adopts both quantitative and qualitative analysis as the method. First, statistics of the frequency and distribution of reporting verbs are computed. Then features of reporting verbs are analyzed, so that to find out the relationship between the reporting verbs and ideology. The data processing tools are ICTCLAS 2013 and WORDSMITH 5.0.The study shows that neutral reporting verbs are used most frequently in news reports. China Daily uses more types of reporting verbs but the New York Times uses more times of reporting verbs in total. Besides, the New York Times uses more negative verbs than China Daily. After all, there are some similarities and differences of the using of reporting verbs in Chinese and English news. The subjects of reporting verbs and the emotive effects of reporting verbs can reveal the relationship between reporting verbs and ideology in some degree.
