Through comparison and contrast, this thesis investigates the difference between the English edition and the Chinese edition of Reuters news from an ideological perspective based on the analysis of the news reports of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.News has been seen and dealt within a very functional and pragmatic paradigm for a long time.Recently scholars begin to shift the focus to a sociocultural concept.News selection and translation needs to be studied in connection with society, history and culture. The difference between the two editions may be generalized not only over language but also over different social and cultural context. To that end, different kinds of news are studied bilingually. It is closely related to translation, and most of the news is translated from one language to another. The translation factor can be found throughout the whole study. However,we can find variations across countries in the emphasis on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games news. The factors that influence news translation are not only language, but also ideological diversity between different nations and countries.Ideology, patronage and poetics are involved in the predominant medium.Ideology is the most decisive element.Meanwhile news is a kind of commercial product in the modern world closely tied to politics and economy.Patronage is the factor that connected with the news agency directly, affecting its profits, authority and status. From this perspective,we will find ideology and poetics which match the patronage factor impacting on news reporting and news translation. It is reflected in the selection of news stories and translation. The findings are discussed under the method of the comparative research and the case study of bilingual medium. By employing comparative approach,in terms of Lefevere's translation theory, this thesis figures out how ideology caters to readers from different cultural backgrounds;how to select different news stories and apply different translation strategies and skills according to different patronages.how poetics impacts on different versions of news targeted at different audiences.
