College English is in the guidance of foreign language teaching theory,language knowledge, applied skills of English,intercultural communication and learning strategy are the main contents of College English, and is a teaching system of multiple teaching modes and teaching instructions. Under the background of rapid development in science and technology, College English curriculum requirements made it clearly that colleges and universities should take full use of modern information technology, adopt teaching mode which is based on computer and classroom, and improve single teaching mode which is mainly taught by teachers. New teaching mode should adapt to the request of the era, and should be supported by modern information technology, make the teaching and learning of English not bound by time and place to some certain extents, it should develop towards the direction of individualized and autonomous. The new teaching mode of English teaching should embody the principle of combining practical, informative and entertaining, and arouse the enthusiasm both of teachers and students, especially reflect the subject position of students and the leading role of teachers in the teaching process.English vocabulary teaching is the necessary and important component of English teaching. As the eminent linguist Harmer(1990) has said, if language structure is skeletal of languages, and it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and flesh-and-blood for the language.However, situation of College English vocabulary teaching is not optimistic, according to investigation of the author, it is found that there are serious problems in teachers’ vocabulary teaching and students ’ vocabulary acquisition. Multi-modal discourse analysis theory conform to the era background which is based on system function linguistics of Halliday, it adapts to the requirements of today’s College English curriculum teaching, and also extends the range of discourse research to non-language symbols, for example,voice, image, and music, and network,which are beyond language, it also advocates to take full use of variety symbols resources and teaching methods to reached most optimization of teaching effect. Multi-modal lexical teaching mode is applied to the vocabulary teaching of Communicative English by the author, which is not only the extension of multi-modal discourse analysis theory and but also the practice exploration of multi-modal discourse analysis applied in English teaching.After about two months of teaching experiment, author validate the effectiveness that vocabulary teaching mode is applied in English vocabulary teaching, through implementation of vocabulary teaching mode and students vocabulary ability tests which are before and after teaching experiment and questionnaire survey to students who are all in experimental class, eventually the research conclusions and author’s research hypothesis has reached highly consistent, multi-modal vocabulary teaching mode has significantly effect in improving English vocabulary teaching quality, while it plays a active role in improving students’ vocabulary using ability.Therefore, the multi-modal lexical teaching mode plays a strong advantage in promoting college English vocabulary teaching quality and student vocabulary learning performance. English teachers should develop superiority and avoid weaknesses in using multi-modal vocabulary teaching mode, avoid negative effect of multi-modal vocabulary teaching mode in application process, and play maximum superiority of multi-modal vocabulary teaching mode in promoting college English vocabulary teaching quality and students’ vocabulary using ability, students should fit teachers’ multi-modal vocabulary teaching in the process of vocabulary acquisition, make full use of multi-modal vocabulary teaching mode to improve vocabulary using ability.
