The Symphony No.1, written in the special great leap forward period of 1962 to 1963, is the undergraduate works from the symphony composer Wang Xilin when he studied in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, which is his first symphony works during his fifty years of music career. While compared to the program music serviced for the political reason, his works is in an innovative and leading way in the symphony composing history in China for its absolute music thoughts, regarded as a milestone in our modern music development history. In the meanwhile, this ill-fated symphony experiences wholly 37 years from its creation to its premier event, which can reflect some of the problems in the China symphonic music development road and really worth thinking about.This paper analyzes Wang Xilin’s Symphony No.l from 4 aspects, which includes the creation background and motives, the theme and melodic development, the innovative and aesthetic characteristics as well as the significance of the times.The first chapter mainly includes and summarizes the research purpose, the significance of the Symphony No.1, the previous literature studies and the former findings on the composer and its works.The second chapter explores the works’ composing reason, to attempt to reveal the creative background and the personal experiences as well as the social context of the composer, in addition, to introduce the composer’s accumulation of human knowledge, western composition techniques and Chinese folk music, also to analyze its composition motives.The third chapter analyzes<the first symphony>’s technical approach, including how the composer promote, conclude and apply Chinese local opera into the composition of the Symphony No.l, also how to combine the western composition techniques with Chinese opera elements from the regards of the works theme, melody, instruments and structure ect. in order to discuss both of the national symphonization of Chinese traditional opera and the nationalizing of the composition of the Chinese symphony.The fourth chapter studies the aesthetic characteristics and the significance of the Symphony No.1, to understand Mr. Wang Xilin’s composition style and his aesthetic prefers, through the elaborating of the program music, the tragic in the Symphony No.1, and its excellent mix of ethnic music elements, western composition approach and the composer’s soul, thus hope to find out its contribution to that period.The conclusion chapter finally summarizes the works’prominent features from its composition techniques and its aesthetic thoughts.
