A Multiple-angel Research On The Interjection "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)"

This thesis selects "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)" as the research object from interjections, then extensively discusses its developmental process, its semantic and syntactic performance and its function when conceived as a discourse marker.Chapter one, as the exordium, introduces our research content, the reason why we choose this topic, the research significance, the existing achievements and some relative issues such as the source of our corpus.Chapter two makes reasonable explanations for the developmental process of "Ai(å“Ž)" and "Ya(å‘€)",and generative process of "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)". To our surprise, the interjectional meaning of the three interjections appeared in Yuan dynasty by chance, then we prove that "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)"is a outcome of interior self-reproduction in the protogenous interjection system, rather than the liaison of "Aya(å•Šå‘€)".Chapter three analyzes the collocation and distribution of "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)", and its corresponding function in each location. "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)" could be located among a clause, among a compound sentence, among a paragraph, or a dialogue, additionally, we deeply discuss its performance in compound sentences and its applicability in style of writing.Chapter four mainly interprets the main characteristics of "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)". As we find, apart from being flexible in syntactic location, it also possesses the feature of being unfixed in forms, being substitutive for sentences, being subjective and markedness. The subjective meanings emerging from different contexts are substitutes for short sentences, meanwhile "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)" has lots of similar variants and owns the function of markedness in discourse coherence. Starting from analyzing the possibility of "Aiya(å“Ž å‘€)" as a discourse marker, we then show its corresponding function including marking logical or sematic relationship, organizing discourses and communicating interpersonally.The last chapter is the conclusion part, in which we briefly draw the universality between "Aiya(å“Žå‘€)" and other interjections, and where the individuality of "Aiya(å“Ž å‘€)" lies, after this comes the whole conclusion and deficiency of this thesis.
