German has a long history of emigration. It is one of the earliest nations of emigrating to the North America. Since the New World found, the Germans have then continuously emigrated toward this land which is full of opportunities and challenges. Based on the formal immigration records beginning in the 1820s in the United States, and the establishment of the German Empire in 1871 as a dividing line, the process of modern German emigrate to the United States can be divided into three historical stages in this paper, i.e., stage of early emigration, rapid development stage, as well as the prosperity and decline stage. On each historical period, this paper respectively clarifies the specific situations of German America emigration, and then analyzes the specific reasons of their emigrating from the point of German pushing factors and America’s pulling factors. Furthermore, this paper discusses the relationship between the German America emigration and development of the United States, especially for agricultural, industrial, political and educational developments. After hundreds of years, German America emigrations have become the undisputedly biggest immigrant group in the United States. Census in 1990 showed that nearly 60 million American citizens, which accounts for about a quarter of the total population in the U.S., believe that they are descent of German America emigrations. Men can declare without any hesitation that for the remarkable achievements (especially in agriculture, industry and education) made by them, the independence, development and prosperity of the U.S. are inseparable with the German immigrants. In a word, the hundreds years of modern German emigration to America, which automatic adjustment in essence and determined by the social and economic pushing-pulling factors of both German and the U.S., is a typical laissez-faire social movement from the point of modern population globalization.
