From 1960s to 70s, which was also known as New Hollywood, the style of American Films changed drastically. Through analysing the editing style in classic Hollywood and New Hollywood, this dissertation will attribute the transformation of editing style to the theory of Emotional Editing which was proposed by Walter Murch. Hence, this change can be concluded as transformation from Analytical Editing to Emotional Editing. Besides, this dissertation will also observe the economic and cultural background of Hollywood, in this way it will review the change of editing style from a perspective of social reform.In addition, the second part of this dissertation will discuss the influence that Emotional Editing has on Chinese films. Since the birth of Chinese film, American films had a great impact. Although after 1949 the figures and narrative elements of Hollywood had been erased from Chinese films, the continuity editing style sustained to some degree. After the Cultural Revolution, when the filmmakers and film theorists began to discuss film theories and styles, the effort of modernization the filmmaking initialed again. And Emotional Editing style played a subtle role for the recovering Chinese films. Therefore, reviewing Chinese films in this era and beyond will be helpful for clarifying the transformation of style in films since 80s. In the meantime, the research of Emotional Editing style can also help us to judge and criticise contemporary editing styles in Chinese film.
