Chinese Element In Hollywood Film Since The Beginning Of This Century

In the current world featuring multi-culture, film as a part of culture and art is inevitably effected by our era. The Hollywood Film, which gets as much attention of the world as it does, represents the typical American values and as well needs the input of more different cultural background, ideas and thoughts. It always attracts millions of audience with its daydream instance narrative and breathtaking audial and visual impact. However, it's another strategy of fighting for eyeballs is to add some Chinese elements into the Hollywood films. Since the beginning of this century, the Hollywood has further strengthened its cooperation in the film industry with other countries and invited more Asian film makers to work in US, including directors, playwrights, photographers and especially film stars, while the most obvious means among others is using Chinese elements in their film making. Sharing Chinese elements worldwide as a cultural symbol meets the demanding of the social development and reflects the Chinese positive attitude of cultural exchange as well. The profound history and abundance of cultural resource of China has long attracted the probe and exploring of film-makers from home and abroad.This thesis takes as a clue the cultural phenomenon of Chinese elements appearing in the Hollywood films, presenets the history of using Chinese elements in Hollywood film since the beginning of this century by combining example listing with theoretical research, and analyzes the character, form and meanings of Chinese elements by integration of Comparative Literature, Cultural Domain Theroy and Film Narratolog on the basis of the film as an object. It presents the cultural conflict and fusion through the analysis of film narrative, compares the cultural difference in the cultural conflicts, thus to find the common point of two cultures and new qualities after their fusion, and further explains the reason why Chinese elements are highly pursued in Hollywood, and finally the impact towards the world, the audience and the development of Chinese movie industry brought by that phenomenon.
