As an important art form of Chinese Traditional Paintings, Mogu Painting was derived from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, matured in Song and Yuan Dynasty and flourished in Ming and Qing Dynasty. During the past 1500 years’ development, Mogu Painting has formed its own comprehensive theories and painting styles. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the western paining theories and styles were spread to China with the break out of The Opium War in 1840. As a result, many kinds of the Chinese traditional painting style were shocked by the western styles. From that moment to nowadays, Mogu Painting has achieved tremendous development during the process of collision, fusion and exploration of different ideologies, not only in the innovation of painting materials and drawing skill, but also in the areas of painting concept, ideology and artistic expression. This thesis introduces the derivation, evolution and branches of Mogu Painting, especially its development from Ming and Qing Dynasty to current periods, and finally focuses on what we should inherit from the traditional painting style and how we should develop the new paint materials and technology to make this ancient art form reborn. Meanwhile, I have made a summary and analysis for the problems I encountered during my previous painting career and indicated directions for my future creation.
