In the late 1980 s and early 1990 s, a new generation of young directors, who had been influenced by both native and foreign culture and had a personal narrative style, made a figure. Those directors finally shaped the artistic feeling and narrative style typically owned to themselves.This thesis adopts a combination of relevant literature narrative theories and film narratology to analyze the organizing patterns of sequence served for the units of expressing meanings like the shot that governs movie morphology, and to study the narrative strategies and mode in constructing text and discourse, and at the same time, to explore the intrinsic narrative characteristics of directors of the new generation. The present study falls into six parts.The first part is about the introduction, in which the current situations of researches on the directors of the new generation, research characteristics and research methodology and significance of the present study are introduced. The second is about the emergence of directors of the new generation. This part includes three aspects, respectively, disputes among the industrial insiders at home and abroad of how to name those directors, multivariant reasons leading to the emergence of directors of the new generation and the author’s views on the naming. The third part is about study on narrative strategies employed by directors of the new generation. This part starts with basic narrative strategies of movie, combined with movie text, and adopts mixed perspectives(perspectives from the subject and the third person) and unconventional views to analyze the narrative characteristics of the directors from such aspects as temporal narration of circling and intersecting, spacial narration of zero-strategy shot, open construction of reverie,etc. The directors of the new generation express with individualized attitude their feelings and mercy on marginalized people, society and the era. The controversial narrative style has brought people different visual feelings and enjoyment. The fourth part is study on narrative mode of the directors. One is cultural mode——that the directors depict social life of Chinese people from all walks and record rational spirit expressed by movie. Creative mode comes the second—that the directors of the new generation mainly use the styles of Mac Guffin and Calvino to reform linguistic forms and creation concepts of movie. The last point is mode of artistic conception. The fifth part is about the narrative aesthetics of the directors, the predicament and countermeasures. The directors of the new generation are influenced by postmodernist styles, and their narrative construction of collage and realistic style has won compliments and appreciation of different levels for their films. In the meantime, the monotony of the themes inevitably causes negative impacts on the audience and under great pressure from the mainstream production, censoring systems and the box office, they have to reconsider their future and look for outlets and countermeasures.The conclusion is about the author’s views on the directors’ narrative morphology and beauty appreciation, the extent to which the curiosity of audience is satisfied.
