Study Of Category For Estimates Of Modern Chinese

Estimate is one of the expressions of fuzzy quantity, and every language in the world has the estimate expressions. People’s cognitive competence and the limitless world’s needs for being perceived and explored make people measure or count things incompletely. However, in our daily life, we have to express our thoughts, thus emerging the estimate, which makes it easy for people to express their ideas, and Chinese is no exception. With modern Chinese estimates as the object, this thesis will study some related aspects of them. And there are six chapters in this thesis.The first part is the introduction to the reason for writing, the present situation and research achievements of estimates in modern Chinese, and on the basis of previous theories, the author will present the significance, methods and corpus sources of the study. Chapter One will discuss some issues about the definition, on which basis redefine the estimates, confirm the semantic category of estimates and conclude five features of them. Chapter Two will on one hand analyze the causes of estimates from aspects of ontology, object as well as human society; and on the other hand, study the category of the estimate particles on syntactic level. Chapter Three and Four will conclude some expressions of estimates. In Chapter five, on the basis of instances in communication, and by means of induction and deduction, the author will summarize four interval value ranges of estimate expressions. And the last chapter will study the pragmatic value of estimate in communication from aspects of economical efficiency, cooperation, courtesy and self protection.In this thesis, with the estimates as the center, and from aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, the author will try to elaborate the category for estimates completely by combining description and analysis, induction and deduction as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis.
