Exploration And Reflection In Survival Predicament

Humans are social animals, and inseparable from the society. A good environment exerts a positive influence on humans’ life, and in turn, a bad environment may cause the distortion of human nature. Fang Fang, the Landscape of whom once aroused great repercussion, is viewed by critics as one of the "new realistic" writers. Compared with other new realistic writers, Fang Fang’s writing is not entirely the "original" writing, or "zero narration". Through careful and in-depth exploration, it is not hard to feel Fang Fang’s ideal of improving people’s survival environment from such hideous matters described in her novels as human’s black hole and harsh survival environment. As a writer living in an intellectual family yet having the experience of a loader, Fang Fang writes its novels about intellectuals and common citizens with facility. This thesis analyzes Fang Fang’s novels about intellectuals and citizens, and explores the survival predicament of citizens and intellectuals under the pen of Fang Fang. Besides, through the analysis to novel texts, this thesis also explores Fang Fang’s care about human nature and her humanistic spirit as an intellectual, and discusses her ideal construction for human’s survival environment.This thesis can be mainly divided into four parts. The first part focuses on the formation of Fang Fang’s writing standpoint, the changes of writing styles in different periods and the influence of unique geography and culture on her writing. The second part explores the lives of the humble characters under the pen of Fang Fang and the evil aspects of human nature shaped by external environment through analyzing the novels of Fang Fang about citizens. Furthermore, this part also points out the relationship between the reasons causing the evil aspects of human nature and the external environment, thus revealing Fang Fang’s care about and attention to human nature. The third part analyzes the images of three-generation intellectuals described by Fang Fang, from the grandfather generation with true intellectual spirit, the father generation with the gradual spiritual degeneration under the oppression of politics to the generation of us lost in the tide of market economy. Different survival predicaments of intellectuals are explored under different environments and different historical backgrounds, and in the predicaments, intellectuals’ ideal of pursuing their dreams vanishes like soap bubbles and they have to struggle for their survivals under various pressures. The fourth part expounds the humanistic care spirit of Fang Fang as an intellectual. In her writing, Fang Fang adopts the writing technique of realism, aiming at revealing the dominant influence of environment on humans. Besides, the consciousness of resistance, fighting spirit and helplessness of fate reflected from the novel reveal the contradiction between humans and the environment.
