Fang Fang was crown with "the New Realist" by critics when her novel "Scenery" was published in 1987, which won the prize of outstanding National Novelette in period of 1987-1988 and then was considered to have started the prelude to "New Realism". Fang Fang's works always fascinated us with tragic feelings. This thesis tries to reveal the firm view of value she sticks fast to as an intellectual in the current of popular literature, through unveiling her ways in composing all round by analyzing different subjects of her works. The thesis consists of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction outlines the general creating conditions of Fang Fang , the origin of new realistic novels and their characteristics, and the value of her tragical creation in five aspects.First, tragedy of survival plight: impoverishments of fortune and unsatisfactions with the basic physiological needs (such as the need of clothes, food and a place to live in ),these have great impact on the people's need of high-leveled development, leaving us a miserable scene of disjointed life. By exposing the wretched environment, Fang Fang reveals its deep social connection, that is, environment changes the aspect and state of people's life.Second, tragedy of the desolate humanity: she depicted the desolate communication in emotion and the absurd and distorted blood-relationship. Also she portrays a picture of society where good virtues have no standing rooms and disappointedly the lowest criterion of moral are subverted. Fang Fang has digged out the virtue and vice hidden in humanity and disclosed the deep connection which result in different acts of virtue and vice. All of these lead readers to contemplation. Their souls get purified, their sentiments are moulded and they can distinguish good from evil.Third, tragedy of women's love and marriages :in her works .women make a difficult choice between worldly customs and ideal, and they facing the shortages both in material and spiritual world permanently. Fang Fang brings these to us through describing women's love and marriages. She digs out women's questions about the metaphysical matters, such as their lives and values. Rebellions against man's power can be found everywhere in her novels. Her rebellion embodies a kind of independent spirit and represent the height of the female writing in this period.Fourth, in the society where men were in power, men were reigning and were favourite ones. They were strong, brave, fortitude, great, and have the absolute speaking right. However, Fang Fang dispels the myth of man's power. She describes their selfishness, humbleness, incompetence, timidity and wretched appearance, which subverts traditional custom, the religious system and man's power.Fifth, a theory summary of Fang Fang's works: firstly, her works are full of humane care spirit, she fulfils the writing mission—"literature is the study of human beings" through arranging the plot in a tragic way. She depicts the social life, through describing the miserable world in a cold tone, she, in a calm and profound way shows us gray lives of the low class and their rebellion, helplessness and predicament. Secondly, the view of life that she holds fast to : as the consumption times approaches , the modern society is filled with material desires, and people's selfishness expands to the utmost. However ,she can still obey own heart to write , turning down all the temptations of vanity, and it's really admirable that she does such an excellent job. Fang Fang sticks to the principles of a human intellectual and cares for the living problems of people. Now literature in facing the lash of the consumption times, and would it be a consumption, or a way to mould our sentiments and redeem our souls? She chooses the latter. In addition, Fang Fang's novels are not only the dissection of individual life, but also have more profound social, historical connotations and sense of times : she is surpassing by writing. She penetrates deeper and deeper into the base of our real life, and she transmits her philosophical thoughts of life and human society through the tragedy of ordinary and unimportant figures.
